If you can walk, you can dance…

A Zimbabwean proverb states, “if  you can talk you can sing; if you can walk you can dance.” It is this idea that is explored and celebrated in Rhythmic Dance at WYC.

So often in our daily lives, we are our own harshest critics. We are bombarded with images of how we should look, move, sound, and speak. How many times have you said to yourself, “I can’t wear that, my (fill in the blank here) are too big”? Or declined the invitation to dance at a wedding, or sing karaoke with your friends, for fear of how you would look or sound? We all have done these things before, which is why we all need a safe, fun and carefree place where we can let all of these insecurities go.

What is Rhythmic Dance?

Rhythmic Dance is a creative class offering under the umbrella of Kunga Yoga and the 5Elements series. Rhythmic Dance is not about structure. Even if you have convinced yourself that you have no dance skills at all, you can still do Rhythmic Dance. In fact, if you have a structured dance background, you should toss it right out the window before attending this class.

Rhythmic Dance is about exploring the way that our bodies respond to the rhythms of nature and the rhythms of music. It is based upon the five elements of earth, fire, water, air and space. As you begin to move and dance, you will start with an “earthy” selection of music, to help you feel grounded and connected to your body. Moving on to fire, you will stoke your own inner flame, and build up heat in the room, moving faster with everyone around you. You’ll float right into water, allowing your movements to become more fluid and connected; then transition into air and space, where you are free to explore movement in any part of the room, using any movement technique you wish.

You know what the best part about Rhythmic Dance is? There is no way you could possibly do it wrong! The class isn’t about following a prescribed set of movements, it is instead about breaking free from the everyday confines of how we are “supposed” to maneuver our bodies, and exploring how music moves us. You’ll jump, fly, leap, spin, and kick… or not. You can do whatever feels good to you, in a completely judgement-free zone. One thing we do know, though, is that once that music starts pumping, we can’t help but joyfully move our bodies! We always leave this class super sweaty and with a smile on our faces.

Rhythmic Dance is a joyful, wild and fun class that is appropriate for all ages, abilities and backgrounds!
