If you have never tried yoga before, it can be difficult and to know where to start. Googling the word yoga brings up 380 million different results, and YouTube is filled with plenty of videos of dancer-gymnasts practicing yoga poses that, from most of us, elicit gasps of wonder and disbelief. Sometimes all of the information out there about yoga, because the practice is so very ancient and so varied, can even seem intimidating. This is why we have created the Yoga 101 series here at WYC. Our goal here is to show you, all of our students and friends, that not only does yoga not have to be something that is scary or intimidating, but that it is something that is completely attainable to you…and fun! ANYONE can do yoga, regardless of age, gender, background, or size. If you can breathe, you can do yoga!
What is the Yoga 101 Series?
The Yoga 101 series is made up of 3 classes, 1 one-hour class per week for the duration of one month, with each class building upon the next. If you have never done yoga before, then this is a great place for you to start. Can you attend the series if you have practiced yoga before? Of course you can! The Yoga 101 series is a great way to reawaken a past yoga practice! The class is open to all ages and levels of experience. It would also be a great choice for any yogi who wishes to reacquaint him or herself with the fundamentals of yoga, or for someone who is considering attaining yoga teacher certification in the future. Each class will explore yoga in a fun, safe, and comfortable, judgement-free environment. The format is open, so students are encouraged to ask questions as the class moves through different yoga poses, meditation, and breathing techniques. The group is at the same experience level, and with the class enrollment capped at a small size- each student receives one on one personalized attention from the instructor.
What will I learn in the Yoga 101 Series?
-
You will learn important yoga terminology, both in English and in Sanskrit, such as pranayama, which means “breath” or “extension of life force.”
-
You will discover fundamental asanas, or poses, such as sun salutation, child’s pose, and spinal twist.
-
You will explore how to complete each movement safely, and how to modify movements in order to accommodate your own personal abilities (and any injuries you may have or have had).
-
You will receive instruction on how to safely use yoga props such as blankets, blocks, and straps.
-
Most importantly, you will learn how to apply the skills you learn in yoga class, such as meditation, breathing, and alignment, to your daily life once you have stepped off of your yoga mat.
