Meet Superhero Jonathan "J" Miles

On June 6, 2014, the Wilmington Yoga Center will be hosting Jonathan “J” Miles and conducting the Yoga Superheroes Workshop. All attending will be encouraged to find their own inner yogi superhero!

So let’s take a moment to tell you why Jonathan “J” Miles is a superhero!

Jonathan’s pathway to yoga was not a direct one. In fact, his journey began in 1997 by studying Kung Fu and Capoeira. As J witnessed the historical connections between Yoga and Kung Fu, he began to dig deeper. Jonathan began studying texts such as “Tao Te Ching” and “Bhagavad Gita.” In 2001, a friend introduced J to his first Sun Salutation. After practicing on his own, he decided to study Integral Yoga and later, Vinyasa Yoga.

Today, Jonathan teaches his own style of yoga. With a blend of hatha yoga, vinyasa flow, Integral Yoga, Ashtanga principles and Jivamukti dance, his classes are unique to say the least. Jonathan’s students are led through the practices while building strength, courage and confidence. J also infuses his classes with philosophy, humor and efforts to cultivate an inward awareness and focus. Jonathan believes “that life can be lived playfully and skillfully, with joy and passion and an unrelenting belief that we can achieve anything.”

J’s desire is to help as many people as he can by sharing the gift of yoga. “Personally I get the most enjoyment out of spending time with my children, making human connections, and continuing to grow through martial arts and yoga,” he says.

In the spirit of that, in 2010 he co-founded Project Yoga Richmond (PYR). PYR is a non-profit organization dedicated to healing and strengthening individuals and in turn, whole communities. PYR’s mission is to help spread the joy and benefits of yoga to those with the least access, and to create a stronger, unified yoga community. The leaders of PYR believe that yoga should be shared with everyone, so they work to make it accessible and affordable.

Project Yoga Richmond has several outreach programs including Yoga for Autism, Yoga for Seniors, Yoga for Teens, Yoga for Recovery, Freedom Yoga, Yoga for Court-Involved Youth and Yoga for Adults with Special Needs. The organization strives to provide low or no-cost asana, pranayama and meditation guidance on a volunteer basis that reaches all corners of the community regardless of the geographic, economic, or physical state of its practitioners.

Jonathan is definitely showing the world how to live your yoga and for that, he is a superhero! Please join him at the Wilmington Yoga Center to find yours!
