Shiatsu is a Japanese word meaning “finger pressure.” Shiatsu massage is also known as Zen shiatsu and is an alternative medicine that uses finger and palm pressure, stretches and other varied massage techniques. Shiatsu massage is often compared to acupressure because it locates and targets specific pressure points within the body; however, shiatsu delves deeper by incorporating other methods (stretching, breathing and rotation) for a whole-body restoration of one’s energy balance.
This method of massage affects the meridians that flow through the body. Meridians are electromagnetic pathways of energy that govern all things physical, physiological, mental and emotional. Manually manipulating the Ki (energy) that flows along the meridians allows for easier energy passage. An unobstructed flow of Ki also allows the body to cleanse and heal itself.
Shiatsu massage is thought to aid in conditions such as insomnia, indigestion, joint inflammation, migraines and depression because the symptoms of these ailments can be attributed to overactive, underactive, blocked or misrouted Ki.
The Wilmington Yoga Center will be hosting a Shiatsu Massage training the weekend of July 19, 2014. We are thrilled to have Melissa Grey Mosher, ERYT, PT LMBT lead this workshop.
Melissa has been studying, practicing and teaching complimentary alternative medicine for over 30 years. She discovered Shiatsu while working in Japan in 1986 and subsequently trained in Colorado at the Boulder College of Massage Therapy. After graduation, Melissa maintained a thriving practice in the Rocky Mountains where she incorporated Shiatsu, herbs and oils into every massage treatment, helping people find great relief from chronic illnesses such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. In 2003, she moved to Wilmington and now travels the country teaching a variety of continuing education classes.
At this workshop, students will:
1. Learn a hands approach to moving the energy flow along the meridians of the body.
2. Learn which meridian is used for a specific illness or injury.
3. Learn specific yoga moves for each of the meridians to improve one’s own body mechanics and client positioning.
4. Learn about the five elements theory (fire, earth, metal, wood and water).
5. Learn about complimentary alternative medicine (CAM) and how Shiatsu fits into this category.
6. Learn to assist clients to heal on a deeper level- helping them to find root causes, as well as relieving symptoms.
This will be a fun and informative workshop!
