If you’re like most people, then you probably sit at a desk for most of your workday. You might make it to the gym or go running a few times each week, but you may not make time to work on your flexibility. Tight muscles can contribute to injuries and pain throughout the body, making it important to make time in your schedule for stretching and mobility work. In today’s post, we’ll provide you with a few tips that can help you improve your flexibility.

Flexibility Tips
Find Your Limit
You certainly don’t want to stretch too much and injure yourself, but you don’t want to make your stretching routine too easy, either. Push yourself and hold poses and stretches that are slightly out of your comfort zone. You’ll find that your body adapts and improves quickly!
Don’t Rush
Many people find stretching routines that target tight muscles and then proceed to rush through them. It’s not always easy to make time for stretching, but trust us when we say that it’s worth it. Numerous studies show that it takes between 15 and 30 seconds of holding to stretch a muscle, and you should plan to repeat each stretch several times before you see improvement.
Breathe and Relax
Some of us have tight muscles due to stress, and incorporating breathing exercises into your stretching routine is a great way to help your body relax. Smooth, deep breaths actually force your nervous system to calm down, which in turn allows you to stretch more effectively. In addition to working on breathing exercises, you should find healthy ways to relax and unwind after a long day. Coming to our Wilmington yoga studio for a class is always a great option!
Stay Consistent
While stretching is always beneficial, you’ll get much more out of your routine if you practice it consistently. Try to make time in your day to go through your routine — you’ll notice that your muscles are much less tense and easier to stretch when you stay consistent.
Ask for Advice
If you’re struggling with pain, or you just can’t seem to loosen up a certain muscle group, then ask one of our yoga instructors for advice! We’re always willing to help our students find routines and poses that help them feel their best, and we’ll gladly work with you to find a lasting solution to any problems you’re facing.
